Nokia’s journey from manufacturing toilet papers to becoming a pioneer in mobile phone manufacturing is a proof of company’s remarkable evolution and transformative impact on the world of technology.
Nokia’s rich history dates back to 1865, when Finnish engineer Fredrik Idestam founded a pulp mill near Tampere, Finland. In 1868, another pulp mill was established in the nearby town of Nokia, chosen for its abundant hydropower resources. The company derived its name from this town, setting the foundation for the Nokia brand we know today.

The original Nokia logo, introduced in 1866, prominently showcased a fish inspired by the magnificent Salmon fish found in the Nokianvirta River.
In 1922, Nokia Ab, operating in a newly independent Finland, formed a partnership with Finnish Rubber Works and the Cable Factory. Interestingly, Nokia also ventured into the production of toilet paper in the 1960s, manufacturing rolls of this essential bathroom product.
In 1967, Nokia, Cable Factory, and Finnish Rubber Works joined forces to establish the new Nokia Corporation. This marked the beginning of a restructuring process that led to the formation of four key divisions within the company: forestry, cable, rubber, and electronics.
Nokia into networking and telecommunication business
During the early 1970s, Nokia expanded its scope by entering the networking and radio sectors. Notably, Nokia diversified its product line and began manufacturing military equipment for Finland’s defense forces. Additionally, the company produced professional mobile radios, telephone switches, capacitors, and chemicals, further showcasing its growing presence in various industries.
In 1988, Nokia made a significant entry into the mobile telephone manufacturing industry. As part of its expansion strategy, the company acquired the Information Systems division of Ericsson, a notable telecommunications company. This acquisition played a crucial role in Nokia’s journey towards becoming a major player in the mobile phone business.
Furthermore, Nokia also purchased Mobira, a mobile telephony company. This strategic move laid the foundation for Nokia’s future endeavors in the mobile phone industry. The acquisition of Mobira provided Nokia with valuable expertise, technology, and resources that contributed to the company’s success in developing and manufacturing mobile phones.
In September 2013, Nokia made a significant announcement regarding the sale of its mobile division to Microsoft. The sale to Microsoft represented a strategic move aimed at reshaping Nokia’s future direction and focusing on network infrastructure and technology solutions.
